Ban on Same Sex Marraige

Posted on Jun 6th, 2006 by Thea : Cogitator Thea
I read today that President Bush is backing legislation to ban same sex marraige.  The actual wording on the legislation reads:

Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.

Why?  What is so awful about two people of the same sex, male or female, becoming committed to each other?  How is it a corruptable influence, to have two people declare their love for eachother openly, without prejudice or fear?

People ask me why I don't believe in the institution of marraige -  (I'm not married to my 'spouse' of seven and a half years, despite the risks this poses to my children and their future with my spouse). This legislation that our Presidential leader is pushing for is part of the reason.  How can I morally support an institution that is so obviously bigoted?  I cannot, in good conscience, support it, even if I do believe in the prinicipals of marraige; I do not believe in the way those principals are applied.

Divorce rates are up.  How can we, as a culture, allow only men and women to enter into a marraige arrangement, spouting all sorts of moral imperitives, while still openly allowing such disregard for the vows taken on that contract?  Look at the examples we're given - The most watched TV show in the nation,  Desperate Houswives portrays a woman who cheats on her husband with the lawn boy, 2 divorced women, and a woman who's husband was cheating with a paid escort.  COME ON PEOPLE!  There's is a major disconnect in this area that I just don't get. I don't think our President gets it either.
I don't suppose that anyone has ever tried this before, but it's worth a shot.  Should one of you live in one of the 50 states that allow for 'civil unions', my suggestion is that a heterosexual couple file for one of those unions to show support to our gay and lesbian peers.  If the state refuses, file for a lawsuit.  If it is meant to be an equalizing contract comparable to the marraige contract, then there should be no reason to deny a man and a woman a civil union contract rather than a marraige certificate.

I only wish I could do it myself in Florida!

People fear that which they don't understand, or that which is different from them. Don' understand myself what the big deal is about same sex marriage.
